About Kilkee Cliffs SAC (Special Area of Conservation)

The Kilkee Cliffs Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is located in County Clare on Ireland’s rugged Atlantic coastline. Stretching approximately 8 kilometers, this SAC encompasses some of Ireland’s most spectacular limestone cliffs and maritime habitats. The cliffs rise sharply from the Atlantic Ocean, presenting breathtaking panoramic views and serving as a vital habitat for diverse flora and fauna. The area supports significant populations of seabirds such as herring gulls, razorbills, and guillemots, while the marine environment fosters marine mammals including dolphins and seals. The rocky sea stacks and cliff ledges provide nesting sites and refuge critical for conservation. The underlying geology consists mainly of Carboniferous limestone, creating a unique karst landscape that supports specialized plant species adapted to salt spray and thin soils. Historically, the cliffs have been important for local communities for fishing and navigation. Today, the Kilkee Cliffs SAC is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, offering opportunities for scenic coastal walks, wildlife watching, photography, and exploring traditional rural landscapes. The relatively remote and unspoiled nature of the cliffs adds to their visitor appeal, making Kilkee a perfect blend of natural beauty, biodiversity, and outdoor recreation. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the fragile cliff habitats and maintaining the ecological integrity of the marine environment adjacent to the cliffs.
